San Jose: Teatro Nacional, Mercado Central, y Barrio China

All in all, this was my 3rd and final trip into San Jose Central. The kids and Clark had been there a couple more times than me. We wanted to tour the National Theater, and I wanted to take them through the central market since they missed that on their trips.

As we were walking near the theater, I was impressed by the line of red taxis.

Costa Rican flag flying near the theater. Before we went to the tour, we stopped into the Pre-Colombian museum in the neighboring building. There is also an art exhibit and mint displaying the history of Costa Rican monies along with examples.

A sculpture of a campesina, or impoverished Tica. There was a competition for a sculpture to be on display in the theater lobby and this one was chosen. However, the rich people tried to get it disqualified. They didn't like that the sculpture represented a poor woman, when in reality, the sculpture represents the majority of Costa Rican citizens. The theater was built with funds provided by ALL Costa Ricans and MOST Costa Ricans originated from campesinos so it's fitting for the sculpture to be displayed in the theater.

Inside the main gallery.

This sculpture was originally in the roof but the weather and pollution were ruining the marble so a replica was put on the roof and this one is now located in the lobby.

Looking up to the chandelier in the main gallery.

There was alot more beautiful workmanship to appreciate about the theater, but it is difficult to show in pictures. I would encourage you to make the trip there! Maybe even see a show.

A church in the main square of downtown San Jose.

Another look at China Town.

For a reason I can't explain, we gave Chinese food another one more chance. 3 strikes and you're out. We committed to not eating anymore Chinese food in Costa Rica or maybe in Central America period.

It looks good but really isn't great.

Central Market

Its dirty in the market and smells bad, but you can buy just about anything related to the kitchen and eat cheap food.

We found the perfect way to drown out the taste of our bad Chinese food...

On our walk back to the car, this entire avenue was packed with busses.

We saw these fountains lit up on our way back to Coronado. I only regret not stopping into a nice-looking bookstore to see if they had The Island of Lonely Men or The Lonely Men's Island (La Isla de Los Hombres Solos); the book I am hoping to find about Isla San Lucas.
