Excursion #9: Day 2 La Fortuna

Saturday morning, we woke up early and took another hike on the Bogarin Trail hoping to spot the illusive sloth, which, by this point, we had decided was a mythical creature or unicorn.

Is that a sloth up there? Clark spotted this lump, but it was so far away we couldn't be sure. I didn't think it was. We continued walking and when we came upon a couple gentlemen, one of which had a telephoto lens, Clark had the good sense to ask if the men would follow us back to the spot and use his camera to confirm if it was a sloth.

Maybe?

YES!!

Here is another lump I spotted later but we couldn't confirm this one. The shadow makes it hard to tell.

These flowers were attracting hummingbirds.

I found this pretty bird in a pasture adjacent to Bogarin Trail property.

On the trail to the pasture, I found these birds perched in a tree. We called them Tico Turkeys.

Spotted our second sloth with the help of a passing guide!

A view of the trail.

After our hike we hunted some breakfast. The lighting is due to a purple neon sign behind Rosabel.

Omelet and homemade sourdough.

Groceries for lunch and Sunday morning breakfast. We love the easy access to fresh pastries.

Good morning Arenal.

On our way to Rio Celeste with Arenal behind us and to the side. We could view the volcano from a different perspective due to the way the roads wind away from LaFortuna.

Crossing a bridge.

Another view of Arenal from the other side, away from LaFortuna.

The mountains outside of the LaFortuna area.

Crazy blue green water at the Rio Celeste.

Where these two rivers meet, the water turns blue because of the pH change.

A cute lizard.

Picture over the blue river.

A boiling pot.

The trail was rugged. Some steps were almost to my knee.

Down about 200 steps to the waterfall.

Worth it even though swimming isn't allowed.

A dead snake we saw on the trail on the way out.

There is a water hole under a bridge just outside the park where swimming IS allowed.

It was cold but refreshing in the heat.

Chifrio for dinner. The beans on the bottom were amazing!

Craig chose ceviche. It was excellent.

Clark had "BBQ" ribs.

After dinner, we decided to check out the free local hot spring. The hot spring was in a river just outside of the town. We were directed where to park and carefully picked our way down a rocky trail beside a road bridge. There aren't any pictures because it was already dark when we went there. It was quite an adventure sitting in this river hot spring with numerous other people we could hear but not see. Some people had candles in the middle of the river. We enjoyed the warmth of the water while viewing the clear night sky; the perfect end to our busy day.
