Jan. 19:
Papaya. Clark and the kids do not like this, but I think it is sweeter than in the USA. A couple ways they described it was disinfectant and fart. I disagree. I enjoyed it a lot and eat it with yogurt and granola.
Cutting the zapote.
This is my favorite fruit I have tried in Costa Rica to now. This is a cross between a sweet potato (yam) and avocado. Sweeter than a yam and creamy like avocado. Muy bueno!! Me gusta mucho!
The seed of zapote.
Jan. 18:
Guayaba, green mango, papaya (odd shaped yellow one in the middle), golden melon, and the brown one on the right is zapote.
Guayaba (guava) cut open. It's similar to a pear. We weren't sure if it was ripe. It wasn't very sweet.
Golden melon tastes closest to honey dew. These may be available in the States. The guayaba on the right was similar to pear.
Jan. 16:
We've eaten manga (mango), plantones (bananas), fruta del pan (bread fruit), guanabana, guayaba, manzana de agua (water apples), and pina (pineapple). I think we ate yucca with our casado lunch.
Manzana de Agua (red and pear like) and Guayaba (on the right). I didn't get a picture of the inside of manzana de agua but it is very white and I thought more like pear too.
Fruta del Pan (top)
Think slightly sweet with the texture of loose bread dough
Guanabana
Kind of fibrous like a mango. It was sweet and slightly acidic.
Akee fruit has a nut-like flavor and texture. Don't eat the seed or pink membrane; its poisonous! This is the national fruit of Jamaica, and they usually cook it. We saw this at the Caribbean restaurant.
More to come...
